So we have recently been doing some gardening.
My grandpa built some raised bed gardens and filled them with dirt.
We put some garlic, onions, kale, and strawberries.
We water them every day and I dig up worms from the ground and we put them in the raised bed.
It is awesome to see them dig themselves under the dirt.
They have 5 hearts and poop out dirt that they have digested inside themselves that is very good for the soil.
They are very important for gardening.
So here is the story I am going to tell about planting wheat grass in my backyard.
My neighbors Lad and Sandy are good people.
Lad works a lot outside and Sandy sits on the porch a lot.
We have chickens and they sometimes go into his yard.
He doesn't like this so he bought this spraying thing that scares them away from his seed for the birds.
He kept it there for sometime but then he planted some grass right on the border of his yard so he moved it over there to spray the grass.
But here's the thing he doesn't just make it automated so like every minute it sprays his seeds, he makes it spray every time the sprayer senses movement.
He also put a orange rope up and planted flowers to show the border.
I know there is a scripture that says you should love your neighbor but this was going too far.
I needed to get to work, I took a pitchfork and started turning the soil to get it ready for planting.
Then I got some wheat berries.
I planted them right on my side of the border right by his grass.
While I was planting I sang this song.
And I forsaw I couldn't do it on my own I need to pull the weeds.
I sang it A LOT.
Then I started watering them.
I accidentally put some seeds in his yard, He got really mad and I ran inside.
Day 1
So after the first day they started grabbing the dirt and growing roots.
I kept on watering them.
Then Lad moved his spraying thing closer to our property and now I got mad.
When I checked for eggs the thing started spraying and scare the chickens from eating food in their coops. (I got wet too)
Then I got some worms and put them with the wheat berries.
Day 2
So some bad news for day 2.
Everything GONE!
It looked like it had been clawed out by some sort of bird.
My first thought was the chickens but then I am like no they were in the chicken coop all night and they just got out they couldn't have eaten it that fast.
I was DEVASTATED!
Could it have been Lad?
I walked away from the seeds and started walking to the soccer net.
Then I saw a bird in the tree that I haven't seen before.
That's it I said.
I ran home and told mom the bad news.
I told her that it could've been a weird bird I saw.(I wished right then that I took a picture of it)
She walked outside with me and we went to ask my grandpa who worked a lot outside.
He said that it must have been the chickens because he had seen them behind the chicken coop.
Then when I looked at it again it did look like the chickens had been clawing at the dirt.
Then after an hour or so I went and started planting more seeds.
I made sure I stepped really hard on them this time.
Then I watered them really well, then my sister put some dirt on a small part of them that were in between some roots
Day 3
When I woke up again next morning I ran downstairs and out the door.
I sprinted to the seeds, they were all gone again, even the ones with the dirt on them.
I was getting mad, there was not one seed left.
I told mom again and this time we decided to put a lot of dirt on them.
So I put some more seeds there.
Then I spent my morning digging up dirt with worms and other bugs in it and put it on the seeds.
Once I was finished I couldn't see any of the seeds.
I jumped on them with all of my might and then I sprayed them with water.
I was sure it would work this time.
But just to make sure I filled up a jar with wheat berries and put some water in them, then I put a sprouting lid on them.
Then I went outside and slept on the hammock.
The crows were loud and they woke me up a few times.
Then I was awakened by the sound of a stick banging something.
Oh what could it be this time.
I looked out and I saw Lad and his grandson banging a stick against a tree.
I SWEAR they were doing it on purpose to wake me up.
I ran out of the hammock and went inside.
Day 4
I slept in the next day and then I had some breakfast.
Then I went outside and of course all of the wheat berries were gone AGAIN!
I was out of Ideas.
The only thing I could do is grow the seeds in the jar and then once they have sprouted I will put them outside.
So I drained the seeds put more water in and left them outside.
Hopefully this would work.
Day 5 and some more days
So we went on a hike the next day and I was feeling down and everything but then at the ending of the hike Mommy found a worm!
I was so excited I could put these worms in a bowl of dirt and then plant the wheat berries.
So after I had gotten like ten worms we drove home and I quickly dug outside and put the dirt in a glass bowl so I could see the worms tunnels and the roots of the wheat grass.
I put the worms in and put the lid on top of the bowl overnight.
The next day I put the sprouted wheat berries in the bowl.
Then I waited.
The next day they weren't getting any roots or anything.
My dad told me to put dirt on top of them so I did.
Once I had put dirt on top of them I watered them.
Then I waited again.
Then after a couple of days they started growing roots and the grass started growing.
I was so excited.
But THE NEXT DAY.
I put them outside to get some sun and my Grandma came in and said "The Chickens are eating the Grass!!"
I was so mad Mommy told her to get them inside fast.
She put them inside and thank goodness they were not eaten.
The next day It was raining and we put them outside on the bench.
Then it was Sunday the next day and we raced to get to church on time.
When we came back the chicken was on the bowl that was on the bench eating the worms and the wheat berries.
I scared the chicken away.
Most of the wheat berries were gone but the ones that had grown big were still there.
This time we put them on the raised bed garden where they could get sun and rain and the chickens could not get them.
Hopefully they would grow now.
Day like 20
So now they grew but the grass didn't fill up the bowl like I wanted it to, but at least they grew, I was happy. It didn't work out like I wanted but those wheat berries have a whole story behind them now.
